Education for Global Citizenship: Achieving the Sustainable Development Goals Together

During the implementation in the past 15 years, the Millennium Development Goals notably improved the standards of living for hundreds of millions of people around the world. However, it’s not enough. According to the ‘MDG’s Report 2015’, the poorest and most vulnerable people were left behind. In September 2015, to complement the shortcomings, the United Nations declared 17 Sustainable Development Goals, “to eradicate poverty, protect the planet, and ensure prosperity for all”.

Marking the first year of the SDGs, the 66th UN DPI/NGO Conference is entitled is “Education for Global Citizenship: Achieving the Sustainable Development Goals Together” with a focus on the 4th goal: “Quality Education”.

“Quality Education” is a goal that has to be achieved for it is the foundation of the other 16 SDGs. Emphasizing the idea that “no one must be left behind,” Quality education can be achieved through both formal and informal education, as well as advocacy and public information. Furthermore, providing “Quality Education” is crucial to the establishment of global citizenship, which allows people to voluntarily participate and create a healthy civil society.

In order to create a peaceful, just and environmentally sustainable world for future generation, proactive participation from Global citizens is strongly encouraged. At the 2016 World Government Summit, UN Secretary General, Ban Ki-Moon announced, “Our challenge now is to bring to life Agenda 2030 and the Paris Accord and to turn these important agreement into realities for people on the ground.” To make this vision into reality, and achieve the ambitious goals of SDGs through education, participants will bring in, share and rigorously refine their ideas and perspectives at this conference. We hope you will join us in our endeavor.
