Distinguished Guests, Dear Friends, Ladies and Gentlemen, Good day!

On April 25, 1945, the United Nations Conference on International Organization was inaugurated in San Francisco, U.S.A. Two months later, on June 26, representatives of 50 countries signed the “United Nations Charter,” which came into effect on October 24 of the same year, establishing the United Nations. The United Nations Charter is an instrument of international law co-written by nations after suffering the scourge of wars. It stipulates the responsibilities, rights, and obligations of UN member states and codifies the basic principles for handling international relations, international security, social and economic development, as well as maintaining world peace and security. It reflects people’s good intentions and consensus as they aspire to achieve peace and desire to maintain international security.

The annual commemoration of UN Charter Day aims to remind everyone of the fact that the United Nations was established to uphold its mission of maintaining world peace and prosperity, to dedicate itself to global social development, to develop friendly partnerships, to promote international cooperation, and to resolve international disputes, regardless of race, gender, language, or religion. The United Nations strives to enhance and encourage respect for human rights and fundamental freedoms for all humankind, as well as to assert and maintain international justice. When global citizens work together for these common ideals, building a more peaceful and prosperous world is possible.

Supporting and promoting the principles and spirit of peace, equality, justice, and development outlined in the United Nations Charter is the best way to resolve conflicts, maintain international peace and security, and overcome global challenges that human beings are facing. The United Nations and world leaders have a responsibility to ensure that humanity is free from war, poverty, disease, fear, and anxiety. They are responsible for promoting international cooperation in various aspects such as economics, society, culture, education, and health, yet there is a long way to go. The full implementation of the goal of shared prosperity requires the commitment of the entire world.

We should understand that all of humanity shares a common destiny and that we should exercise moral bravery and distinguish between right and wrong. We should inspire one another to take actions to build the future we desire and effectively implement the United Nations Charter. By doing so, we can achieve world peace, security, human rights, and sustainable development.

With dangerous international situations, the pandemic, wars, and unexpected natural and man-made disasters, the living environment for all beings is deteriorating. As global citizens, we should stand up and help the world in times of crisis. UN Secretary-General António Guterres once said, “Amid stormy global seas, the UN Charter remains our moral anchor.” At this critical moment, we need the awakening of conscience in everyone. The awakening of conscience is a good prescription for the “heart.” Each of us has an innate clear reservoir in our hearts, which is the conscience hidden deep within. With conscience, we can rediscover ourselves. By following the guidance of our conscience, we will respect human rights with true love and unite each other for cooperative action. Only then can the world have real peace and stability.

The United Nations Charter was born from the awakening to the chaos of war. The awakening of conscience needs to be implemented in life. We can begin by first changing ourselves, then can we influence others and subsequently turn the world around. The key lies in unity, continuous implementation of conscience, conscience-driven knowledge, and conscientious action. We should resolve disputes with love, coexist peacefully with all other beings in the world, and make personal contributions of goodwill and conscience while connecting the forces of goodness and weaving them into a golden shield of conscience to defend world peace and harmony.

Let us join hands to put the words of the United Nations Charter into action. On this historic anniversary, let us open a new chapter and make a commitment to peace for this and future generations, and let us all become peacemakers. We hope that the people of the world will work together to create more opportunities to resolve crises and pursue win-win situations to realize the common ideal of global peace.

Blessings to you all!

May conscience and good deeds prevail with our immediate awareness and actions.

May our joint power of hope bring about peace.
